ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Education (ICAR-CIFE), Mumbai, took a significant step towards advancing aquaculture technology by licensing its energy-efficient solar-powered Recirculatory Aquaculture System (RAS) to Perception Associates, located in Ranchi, Jharkhand. The licensing agreement was formalized on April 29, 2024, through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by Dr. C. N. Ravishankar, the Director of ICAR-CIFE, and Mr. Akshat Mishra, Co-owner of Perception Associates.

The RAS technology, named CIFE-MOTIRAS, offers two versions: fully automated and semi-automated, each equipped with innovative features designed to enhance efficiency. Notable features include a sludge sink and solid removal system, which significantly reduces the load on the drum filter.

Additionally, the system incorporates a microbial consortium crucial for effective nitrogen management, ensuring optimal conditions for aquaculture. The circulation volume ranges from 4-6 times per day, depending on the stocking density, thereby promoting a sustainable and productive aquaculture environment.

The licensing agreement between ICAR-CIFE and Perception Associates is structured as non-exclusive, granting Perception Associates the rights to utilize the technology for a period of five years. As part of the agreement, Perception Associates will pay a licensing fee and a fixed royalty based on the selling price of the technology.

Present at the signing ceremony were the inventors of the technology, including Dr. Aklakur, Dr. S. Jahageerdar, Nodal Officer at Motipur Centre, and Dr. S.P. Shukla, In-charge of ITMU. Their expertise and contributions underscored the significance of this technological advancement in aquaculture.

This partnership between Perception Associates and ICAR-CIFE represents a significant advancement in the use of sustainable aquaculture technologies. The CIFE-MOTIRAS technology has the potential to completely transform aquaculture methods in India and beyond by utilizing solar power and adding cutting-edge features for efficiency and environmental sustainability.

Through continued innovation and partnerships, stakeholders aim to address challenges in the aquaculture sector while promoting economic growth and environmental protection.
