In the verdant landscapes of Assam's Panbari Village, amidst the lush fields of Chirang district, a remarkable farmer, Sarbeswar Basuramatary, has defied the odds to become a beacon of inspiration. At 61, he proudly wears the prestigious Padma Shri, the nation's highest honor, as a testament to his unwavering dedication to agriculture and integrated farming.

Sarbeswar's journey is a testament to the transformative power of education. Despite hailing from a humble background, his dreams were tethered by financial constraints that prevented him from pursuing higher studies. Yet, fueled by an insatiable thirst for knowledge, he embarked on a path of self-education, navigating the complexities of integrated farming through sheer determination.

Nestled within the heart of the Bodo community, Sarbeswar has not only illuminated his own life but has become the "Chirang Ka Krishi Chiraag" — the lamp of agriculture in the region. His integrated farming practices encompass a harmonious blend of fruit and vegetable cultivation, poultry farming, and innovative rice-fish farming.

The challenges posed by financial limitations and a lack of formal education only served as stepping stones for Sarbeswar. Undeterred, he honed his skills and overcame the hurdles of adopting scientific methods in agriculture. His farm stands as a living testament to the potential that lies within the synergy of traditional wisdom and modern scientific approaches.

Beyond the confines of his village, Sarbeswar's produce finds its way into the markets of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, and other remote corners of the Northeast. His commitment to sustainable and diversified farming practices not only uplifts his community but also contributes to the agricultural landscape of the entire region.

Recognizing his invaluable contributions, the Government of Assam bestowed upon him the Assam Gaurav, the third-highest civilian award, for the years 2022-2023. Sarbeswar Basuramatary stands tall as a living embodiment of resilience, passion, and the transformative power of agriculture, proving that the roots of success can indeed be nurtured from the soil itself.
