Good News for Farmers! Govt. Starts Distributing Smartphones to Farmers

Under the government scheme, 40 per cent of the cost of the smartphones or up to a maximum of Rs.6000 will be borne by the state government for the purchase of smartphones that cost up to Rs.15000.

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel began distributing financial assistance to farmers on Wednesday for buying smartphones. 

"We are trying to ensure that farmers in the state do not miss out on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's digital revolution...

The purpose of this scheme is to guarantee that farmers are not left behind owing to the high price of smartphones," said Patel, distributing Rs.1.84 lakh to 33 farmers in Gandhinagar on Wednesday. 

"The agricultural department has received a total of 40,016 applications for smartphones from farmers." A budget allocation of Rs.15 crore has been set aside for the distribution of smartphones to farmers. Under this scheme, the state government will bear 40% of the cost of the smartphones, up to a maximum of Rs.6000, for the purchase of smartphones costing up to Rs.15000 per unit," said Raghavji Patel, minister for agriculture and farmer welfare, while addressing the virtual event that was being viewed from 70 different locations in Gujarat. 

“These smartphones will help farmer access information regarding agriculture and relevant weather forecasts at their fingertips. They can use this knowledge in their farming,” he said, adding that 25,000 farmers will benefit from this scheme 

Earlier this month, the officials had reported that of the 17,843 inhabited villages in Gujarat, 512 do not have any telecommunication connectivity.

The lack of connectivity is as high as 10-30 per cent in Dangs, Narmada and Kutch districts. 

These smartphones will assist farmers with agricultural information as well as relevant weather forecasts at their fingertips. They can use this knowledge in their farming. Around 25,000 farmers will benefit from this Gujarat Smartphone Subsidy Yojana.

According to a statement released by the state agricultural department, the state government of Gujarat will grant financial assistance of up to Rs.6,000 or 40% of the cost of a smartphone (whichever is less) to farmers in the state for purchasing a smartphone.
