Tamil Nadu CM Disburses Crop Insurance Claims to Farmers

The Prime Minister's crop insurance scheme for 2021-22 has been implemented in 14 packages in 37 districts through the Agricultural Insurance Company and the IFFCO-Tokyo General Insurance Corporation.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Tuesday announced the payment of Rs 481 crore in crop insurance claims to 4.43 lakh farmers in the state for the fiscal year 2021-22.

At a function held at the State Secretariat here, the Chief Minister presented cheques for crop loss insurance claims to about ten farmers from various districts.

According to an official release, the State government has sanctioned Rs 2,057 crore as a State subsidy for the crop insurance scheme for the current fiscal year, and so far 85,597 farmers have taken insurance for crops grown on a total area of 63,331 acres. Tamil Nadu set a record by producing 122 lakh metric tonnes of paddy during the fiscal year 2021-22.

The Prime Minister's crop insurance scheme for 2021-22 has been implemented in 37 districts via the Agricultural Insurance Company and IFFCO-Tokyo General Insurance Corporation in 14 packages.

In 2021-2022, 26.06 lakh farmers registered under the scheme to insure crops grown on approximately 40.74 lakh acres. Around Rs 18 crore has been set aside as compensation for the Kuruvai (Kharif) season, which will benefit 21,125 farmers.

The government provided an insurance subsidy of Rs 1,338.89 crore to insurance firms during the Sambha period for paddy, cotton, maize, and onion.

As a result, the government has taken special measures to expedite the payment of compensation to farmers, and a total of Rs 481 crore has been sanctioned for 4,42,734 farmers, according to the release.
