Here is a list of top 5 mobile apps for the fishermen in India;

Matsya Setu: 

Matsya Setu, the virtual learning of ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (ICAR-CIFA), Bhubneswar, Odisha. The platform has detailed video lectures on the breeding and culture of many important commercial fish species. The course module has been designed in a self-learning style with quizzes. 

This App specifically focuses on the grow-out culture of commercially important Fish like Carp, Catfish, Scampi, Murrel, Ornamental fish, Pearl farming, etc.  

Matsya Setu can also be used to disseminate the latest information on different schemes among the stakeholders, especially fishers, fish farmers, youth & entrepreneurs of the country and facilitate ease of doing business.

CIBA Shrimp App:  

CIBA Shrimpapp is developed by a team of scientists at the ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (CIBA). CIBA Shrimpapp is an innovative communication channel that provides technical support to shrimp farmers, entrepreneurs, and extension personnel and connects them with the scientific community. CIBA Shrimpapp works offline. The app has been updated with several modules as listed below:

  • Better Management Practices (BMPs) 

  • Input Calculators for estimating pond area and volume, total biomass in the pond, disinfection requirements, feed rationing, etc.

  • Disease Diagnostics

  • Shrimp Farm Risk Assessment Module

mKRISHI Fisheries App: 

mKRISHI Fisheries is a mobile app developed by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) Innovation Lab – Mumbai, in collaboration with ICAR- Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute and Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) Hyderabad. 

This app helps identify the potential fishing zones with the help of remote sensing data received from satellites, sea surface temperature, and the presence of phytoplankton which is the food for various fishes. Fishermen can use this service to plan their fishing trips & venture into the sea.

They can also get information about the wind speed & direction, wave heights that will help fishermen to identify the unsafe regions in the sea. 

CIFT Lab Test: 

ICAR-CIFT has developed an innovative Mobile Application named “CIFT Lab Test” intended for providing information related to different types of sample testing and analysis of various fish and fish-based products, fishing gear materials, packaging materials, microbiological parameters, quality parameters of water, etc. 

This Mobile App may be useful for the aquaculture farmers, processing industries, and other stakeholders in the sector to access the contents of different lab tests as per their interest online and get the desired information on the number of samples required, the time required for the test report and cost particulars, etc, available at 24X7. 

Sagara- for the Fishermen: 

Sagara, a Digital Kerala initiative by the Department of Fisheries and NIC Kerala for ensuring Fishermen security, focused on monitoring the fishing vessels and registering the crews going for fishing operations. The mobile application 'Sagara' will primarily act as a form of communication between fishermen and government entities, to monitor fishermen. 

This is an integrated Android-based application to help the Fisheries Department to keep an up-to-date active exit and entry of vessels and fishermen venturing into the sea. The Mobile App has to be first downloaded into their SmartPhone and register for further use. The Mobile App supports multiple languages, which allows the user/ representative to select their preferred language and register the entry and exit details of the boats and passengers.
