Mandi Updates: Wholesale Prices of Sugar and Jaggery Fall Across Key Markets

The month-on-month fall in the wholesale prices of the two byproducts of sugarcane was restricted by a rise in prices in a few states.

The wholesale prices of sugar and jaggery plummeted across the benchmark markets, according to the data from the Agmarknet portal run by the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. 

In the National Capital of Delhi, the month-on-month wholesale prices of sugar fell by Rs 210 per quintal to Rs 4,131 in February, followed by a fall of Rs 152 per quintal to Rs 3,892 in West Bengal. Other states that saw a fall were Maharashtra with Rs 40 per quintal to Rs 3,960, and Uttar Pradesh with Rs 16 per quintal to Rs 4,020. 

Jaggery’s month-on-month wholesale prices dropped in several states, such as Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh. In Tamil Nadu, the prices of the sweet byproduct of sugarcane fell sharply by Rs 686 per quintal to Rs 3,987, followed by a fall of Rs 153 per quintal to Rs 3,525 in Andhra Pradesh. The wholesale prices fell marginally in Uttar Pradesh by Rs 18 per quintal to Rs 3,500. 

This in turn plummeted the month-on-month average wholesale prices of sugar and jaggery by Rs 223.07 per quintal and Rs 157.97 per quintal to Rs 4,030.6 and Rs 3,553.78, respectively.

However, the fall in wholesale prices of jaggery was restricted by the increase in prices in several states such as Karnataka, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, and West Bengal. Similarly, in Rajasthan, the month-on-month wholesale prices of sugar increased by Rs 49 per quintal to Rs 4,150 in February.
