The Commerce Ministry has laid down a process for the import of some varieties of pulses for the current fiscal and has asked for applications from millers.
According to DGFT, the ministry’s foreign trade arm, the millers as well as refiners of these pulses need licence for the imports.
The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) in a notice said, “The procedure for import of 2 lakh tonnes of pigeon peas or toor dal, 1.5 lakh tonnes moong dal, 1.5 lakh tonnes urad dal and 1.5 lakh tonnes peas that includes green peas, yellow peas, kaspa peas and dun peas has been laid down”.
As per the procedure, for every refining or processing unit, the applicants will have to give a self-certified copy of a document representing its refining or processing capacity. This document must be issued by a central, state or district authority.
It said the absence of the document will render the application responsible for rejection.
It added that “The licence holders should submit monthly statements indicating the genuine arrival of shipments at the Indian ports”.
The country has been importing 4 to 6 million tonne of pulses each year to meet the domestic demand of about 24 million tonne.
Taking into consideration the bumper output, the Centre has imposed quantitative limits on the imports.
