FICCI plans to conduct a series of webinars covering such cleaner fuels which promises to play a crucial role in India’s energy transition. The first webinar scheduled March 22, 2021 shall provide a platform to discuss on the subjects of Compressed Biogas (CBG) and Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) over two separate but enriching sessions.

Session 1: The next leap for CBG sector in India

GoI launched the flagship “Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation (SATAT)” initiative in 2018 to provide a much needed boost to the CBG sector. Since then, the sector has witnessed unprecedented momentum- initially led by public sector companies and now joined by various private investors.

Points of discussion:

  • Cross sectoral policy and regulatory interventions required for the sector.

  • Feedstock and supply chain issues faced by the sector.

  • Investor perception of the sector in terms of risks and opportunities.

  • Initiatives taken to ensure affordable financing for CBG entrepreneurs.

  • Authorization for sales of CBG independently by entrepreneurs in licensed CGD Gas.

  • Initiatives to be taken for expansion of the sector to tougher market segments.

Session 2: Future of LNG in India

In the recent years, natural gas demand in India has been driven by factors such as higher availability, government’s push for developing gas infrastructure, better policy support and the environment friendly characteristics of natural gas. Though fertilizer and power sector remain the top contributor to natural gas demand in India, other sectors such as CGD, refinery & petrochemicals, heavy industries such as steel, others such as ceramics, pharmaceuticals etc. are expected to further boost the gas demand.

Points of Discussion:

  • Policy and regulatory interventions required to ensure wider adoption of emerging LNG applications

  • Infrastructure and supply chain issues faced by the sector and the potential alternative solutions (ssLNG being the prominent one)

  • Roadblocks and challenges need to be addressed to commercialize ssLNG

  • Financial challenges faced by OEMs and other stakeholders across the value chain of ssLNG.
