National Conference on Manipur Agro Sector Logistics Challenges and Solutions

National Conference on Manipur Agro Sector Logistics Challenges and Solutions will be organized by the ASSOCHAM on 17 July 2021(Timing: 3 PM Onwards ) with the focus on “Developing Agri Produce Logistics in Tribal and Backward Areas”.

Purpose of Conference:

  • Logistics in the agricultural sector present challenges unique to agricultural production that require efficient transportation. The issue of food wastage is crucial to India’s efforts of improving food security. While focus has been on improving production, reducing food supply chain losses remains a relatively unaddressed problem till very recently.

  • Logistics plays an important role in agricultural production and supply-chain management, ultimately enhancing food safety and quality. Improvements in rural logistics help farmers to harvest and market crops more efficiently; and by facilitating communication, they serve to expand the markets for agricultural products.

  • Developing rural logistics can result in effective  and efficient distribution channels between urban and rural areas; improve the quality and value of agricultural products; and provide low-cost, high quality consumer goods to the countryside.

Focus Areas:

  • Evaluation of current Logistic Scenario and bridging the Gap

  • Linking FPOs, Marketing Agencies, Producers, Processors, Existing cold storage units, Logistics Providers and Research Institutes

  • Session on warehousing, packaging and on local solutions at farm level refrigeration techniques

  • Awareness among start-ups/ entrepreneurs on Technology Intervention

  • Mobilizing start-ups and entrepreneurs to avail scheme and facility

Why Manipur?

  • Manipur state is present in the north-eastern region of the country and due to its wealth of flora and fauna it is known as the ‘Jewel of India’. Its breathtaking scenic beauty also helps in the economy of the state. Manipur with the help of its Moreh town, it is easy for the state to trade between India and Myanmar and other Southeast Asian countries.

  • With about 3,268 square km of the area covered by bamboo forests, Manipur is one of India’s largest bamboo producers and also the trader which makes it the major contributor in the country’s bamboo industry and state’s economy.

  • The total production of horticulture crops in Manipur in 2018-19, stood at 835.82 thousand tonnes and area under production was 104.79 thousand hectares. The total vegetables and fruits produced in the state were estimated at 0.354 million tonnes and 0.451 million tonnes, respectively.

  • Some cash crops suited for Manipur include Lychee, Cashew, Walnut, Orange, Lemon, Pineapple, Papaya, Fruit, Pear and Plum. The lush green zone of the state supports the economy of the state.

  • Manipur is suitable for the development of horticulture. Besides, there is ample scope for bringing more land under fruit cultivation in the hill areas. Even in the plains, soil conditions are conducive to production of citrus fruits, banana, guava, peaches, apricot, papaya etc.
