Cheruvayal Raman, a Wayanad Farmer to Receive Bhakshya Bhadratha Award

Cheruvayal Raman, the Padma Shri-awarded farmer from Wayanad, will be the first recipient of the Bhakshya Bhadratha Award, established by the Kerala State Food Commission to recognise farmers who contribute to food security through traditional methods.

Commission Chairman K.V. Mohankumar announced the award here on Friday, saying the commission planned to raise grassroots awareness about the Food Security Allowance Rules-2015, which the public is largely unaware of.

Priority consumers with yellow or pink ration cards have the right to file a complaint with the District Grievance Redressal Officer if they were unable to obtain services from nearby ration shops due to internal errors such as faulty electronic point of sale (E-pos) machines.

G.R. Anil, Minister of Food and Civil Supplies, will present the award on March 18 at 11 a.m. at Kozhikode's Nalanda Auditorium. The function will be presided over by Thottil Raveendran, MLA, with M.K. Raghavan, MP, as the chief guest.

Mayor Beena Philip will be there, as well district panchayat president Sheeja Sashi, Food and Civil Supplies Secretary Ali Asgar Pasha, and District Collector N. Tej Lohit Reddy.

The prize includes a sculpture, a citation, and Rs 11,111 in cash. Raman is known to have saved up to 58 varieties of paddy seeds that were once grown in Wayanad but are now on the verge of extinction.

According to the National Food Security Act of 2013, the State Food Commission analyses the public distribution system through ration shops, nutritional assistance to pregnant women and lactating mothers through Anganwadis, and nutritional support to children up to the age of 14 through the mid-day meal scheme at schools.
