Under the Students-Undergraduate Research Graduate Excellence (SURGE) program, students from IITK and other participating institutions undertake short duration, but focused research projects and push their intellectual abilities beyond those driven by the classroom. The duration of the program is approximately 8 weeks.
The SURGE-2022 Program is tentatively scheduled to be held from 13th May 2022 till 14th July 2022. An award plus a commendation certificate is given to those SURGE students who produce exceptional quality research during the period. After four weeks, the SURGE participants are required to give a mid-term presentation to a review committee consisting of a group of academic staff members of IIT Kanpur. The review committee gives feedback and suggests possible improvements in the work.
Due to the third wave of Covid-19, the program switched completely to online mode.

The following are the qualifying conditions for students from other countries to apply for a summer internship at IIT Kanpur at the time of internship start:

Tech/BE/B-Arch/BS (3rd year completed),

A five-year degree program (3rd year completed, 4th year completed)

a B.Sc./B.A. (2nd year completed)
For Non-IITK students
Non-IITK students will be able to apply for a summer internship at IIT Kanpur under this scheme. SURGE is available to all colleges this year.
The following are the eligibility conditions for Non-IITK students at the time of internship start:

How to apply for the SURGE Program 2022?

Eligible applicants must register ONLINE via the official website.

From January 12, 2022, to February 4, 2022, all students seeking an internship will be able to fill out an online application on the website.
Step 1:
Register for SURGE 2022

There are three categories:
IITK: Only IITK students are eligible to apply in this category.
NON-IITK: Only Indian students of different Indian institutions may apply.
SAARC: Only NON-Indian (Nepal, Bhutan) students may apply.

Fill out the registration form completely. An email with login credentials would be sent to the registered email id reflecting the successful completion of the online application registration.
Step 2:
Pay the application fee 500/-( Non-refundable)

Step by step, complete all four sections, including the uploading of essential documents.

Following submission, you will get an email confirming the successful completion of the online application form, as well as your Application Number. In all future contact, please provide the application number.

Only after the application fee has been received will the application be deemed complete.
If the mentor/recommender wishes to keep the confidentially of the mentor/recommender certificate, they can send the pdf file of the relevant certificate together with the participant's Application number to surge@iitk.ac.in.
Applications that are incomplete or incorrect will be summarily rejected.
