While the seaweed sector in India is witnessing positive developments, collaborative efforts are essential to overcome existing challenges and foster sustainable growth across the value chain. Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying Parshottam Rupala is invited to attend the National Conference on Promotion of Seaweed Cultivation on January 27, 2024, at Koteshwar (Kori Creek), Kutch, Gujarat. This is a key step towards strengthening the seaweed sector. The Department of Fisheries is organizing this pivotal event with the primary objective of strengthening and developing the seaweed industry.

Stakeholders Convergence: A Platform for Learning and Collaboration

With approximately 300 participants expected, the conference will bring together policymakers, central and state fisheries officials, researchers, seaweed farmers, and representatives from local gram panchayats and SHGs. The gathering will serve as a unique opportunity for small entrepreneurs and farmers to delve into best practices, exchange ideas with industry experts, and witness on-field demonstrations of seaweed cultivation at Kori Creek.

Key Speakers and Exhibitions

Renowned scientists from ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) and CSIR-Central Salt Marine Chemicals Research Institute (CSMCRI), along with entrepreneur Hari S Thivakar from The Seaweed Company, Lakshadweep, will share their on-field experiences and insights during the event. An exhibition featuring participating entrepreneurs and research organizations is also scheduled.

Addressing Gaps and Formulating Strategies

The conference aims to address critical gaps in the seaweed value chain, including identification of cultivable locations, suitable cultivation technologies, access to quality seeds, risk mitigation through species diversification, and strengthening market linkages. Discussions will also revolve around the formulation of water leasing policies, understanding new policy frameworks, and increasing access to Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) benefits.

Seaweed: A Solution for Climate Change and Nutrient-Rich Food

Seaweed, a marine algae traditionally consumed worldwide, is gaining recognition for its role in climate change mitigation. Rich in minerals, iodine, and vitamins, seaweed can be grown without the need for land and fertilizers, making it an efficient way to sequester carbon and produce highly nutritious food.

PMMSY's Strategic Vision for Seaweed Sector

Under the flagship scheme PMMSY, the Department of Fisheries envisions a robust seaweed industry in India. With a strategic focus, the initiative aims to achieve an impressive production target of 11.2 lakh tonnes, supported by a substantial investment of Rs. 640 crores earmarked for the fiscal years 2020-2025.

Financial Support Under PMMSY

The Department of Fisheries has already invested Rs 193.95 crore (FY 2020-21 to FY 2023-24) in the seaweed sector. This includes the establishment of a Multipurpose Seaweed Park in Tamil Nadu and a seaweed brood bank in Daman and Diu.

Financial assistance has also been provided for the distribution of raft and monoline/tubenet for seaweed cultivation, along with funding for various research projects on seed and species’ diversification.
