On January 15, 2024, Basanta Kumar Kar, popularly called the Nutrition Man of India, attended Krishi Jagran's KJ Chaupal, shedding light on the threat of malnutrition. As the session unfolded, Kar provided insights into the pivotal role of nutrition and the necessary agricultural transformations needed to combat this burgeoning challenge.

The Importance of Nutrition in Agriculture

Kar commenced his address by applauding Krishi Jagran's dynamic team and reaffirming the link between agriculture and nutrition. Despite not being from a scientific background, his commitment to making nutrition a household name was evident. Kar emphasised the need for constant agricultural innovation to ensure the effective delivery of nutrition, marking a paradigm shift in traditional practices.

Government Initiatives and Amplification of POSHAN Abhiyan

The discussion delved into the government's POSHAN Abhiyan, launched in 2018, with Kar shedding light on its subsequent amplification through programs like POSHAN Maah, Anemia Mukt Bharat, and the Eat Right campaign. Aligning with global efforts, 2023 being declared the International Year of Millet was seen as a significant step in combating malnutrition in India.

Agriculture and Micro-Nutrient Deficiency

Kar presented startling statistics, revealing that about 89% of children in India suffer from inadequate nutrition, attributing the root cause to the agricultural sector. He stressed the need for a shift towards producing protein-rich outputs and addressing the prevalent issue of micronutrient deficiency. Advocating for nutrition-sensitive agriculture, he urged the industry to innovate for sustainable and climate-smart nutrition-based agriculture practices.

Bengal Famine

Drawing parallels between India and Germany, Kar highlighted the need for a cohesive approach between ministries for agriculture and nutrition. Reflecting on historical events, he shared insights on the Bengal famine, emphasising how the outbreak of unknown pests and decreased exports led to an agricultural disaster. These lessons underscored the importance of proactive measures in the face of evolving challenges.

Malnutrition: A Potent Threat

In a bold statement, Kar asserted that malnutrition poses a deadlier threat than COVID-19. He underscored the significance of proper nutrition as a robust protective shield, akin to a strong PPE kit. Proper nutrition, according to Kar, not only safeguards individuals but also keeps them away from social injustices, such as bonded labor. This profound perspective challenges conventional notions, emphasising the urgency for a holistic national approach to address malnutrition.
