The Central Institute of Fisheries Nautical & Engineering Training (CIFNET) has taken a proactive approach to address critical gaps in the fishery sector by providing comprehensive training programs aimed at ensuring the safety, security, and welfare of fishermen. These initiatives also focus on enhancing production and productivity, as well as increasing processing and value addition in the industry.

Recognizing the need to reach out to fishermen across the country, CIFNET has established a dedicated task force to design training programs tailored to the specific needs of various coastal states and union territories.

These programs encompass a wide range of topics, including capacity building in deep sea fishing, on-board handling of tuna, defect rectification and maintenance of boat engines, fishing practices, life-saving appliances and safety at sea, and communication and navigation equipment on-board fishing vessels. Furthermore, the training covers hygienic handling and preservation of catch onboard fishing vessels, ensuring that best practices are followed throughout the process.

The implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) scheme marks a significant milestone in the fishery sector. This scheme, designed to foster sustainable and responsible development of the industry, has proven to be a breakthrough for the upliftment of fishermen. By addressing critical gaps and focusing on the holistic growth of the fishery sector, PMMSY aims to bring about a "blue revolution."

Over the past three years, CIFNET has successfully conducted in-house and outreach skill development training programs that have directly benefited more than 3,000 fishermen. As the national training institute for deep sea fishery training, CIFNET plays a pivotal role in enhancing the quality of life for fishermen by upgrading their skills and ensuring the safe and effective operation of deep sea fishing vessels.

These training programs have enabled fishermen across coastal states and union territories to enhance their overall skills in tapping into deep sea fishery resources while adhering to adequate safety measures and seamanship practices.

Through the combined efforts of CIFNET and the implementation of the PMMSY scheme, the fishery sector is experiencing positive changes. The training programs conducted by CIFNET have not only empowered fishermen but have also contributed to the overall growth and development of the industry.
