Under the direction of Secretary Vivek Bharadwaj, the Ministry of Panchayati Raj organized a crucial meeting to investigate the integration of solar energy in Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs), marking a substantial step towards sustainable energy practices. The discussion, held to formulate a comprehensive strategy, focused on developing sustainable business models and aggregating demand within Panchayats to expedite the adoption of solar initiatives at the grassroots level. In rural India, solar energy can also power other industries including carpentry, weaving, pottery, and agriculture. In these fields, people can also look for work and develop their skill sets.
During the meeting, Secretary Bharadwaj emphasized the need for a concentrated effort to implement solar systems in Panchayats, highlighting the importance of active participation from all stakeholders.
Prioritizing 'Clean and Green Villages': A Vision for Solar Integration
Bharadwaj proposed that Panchayats actively engaged in developing thematic plans under Theme 5 'Clean and Green Villages' should be given priority for installing solar systems on a commercial basis. Additionally, he identified five states with a higher number of Panchayats committed to the "Clean and Green" initiative, suggesting targeted efforts in these regions.
Aligning with Global Commitments: Gram Urja Swaraj
Acknowledging Prime Minister Modi's commitment at the COP 26 Summit and recognizing India's vast potential in renewable energy, the Ministry of Panchayati Raj is driving substantial efforts to realize the vision of 'Gram Urja Swaraj.' This strategic push aligns with the national agenda of sustainable and clean energy by promoting the widespread adoption of renewable energy in PRIs.
Collaborative Efforts with Industry Leaders
Key participants in the meeting included representatives from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Solar Energy Corporation of India, and the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency. The National Solar Energy Federation of India (NSEFI), a prominent solar industry body, actively contributed to the dialogue.
Notable representatives from leading companies such as Tata Power, SunMaster, Axis Energy, IB Solar, Ahasolar, and Aerocompact were also present, demonstrating a collaborative approach towards sustainable energy solutions.
NSEFI's Perspective: Developing Pilot Projects for Varied Business Models
Deepak Gupta, General Secretary of NSEFI, welcomed the Ministry's initiative and proposed the development of pilot projects in selected Panchayats across the country. These projects would serve as case studies, offering insights into different business models and paving the way for scalable and replicable approaches in the future.
