Tripura On a Mission To Promote Pineapple and Jackfruit Crops Abroad

The Tripura government announced to set up a pineapple and jackfruit mission on 23 February, Wednesday for the next 5 years. The mission will start in April this year. Tripura has taken the initiative to work towards the goal of promoting the growth of pineapple and jackfruit.

They are also working on the mission to gradually increase their export to foreign countries to develop a sustainable economy. Tripura announced queen pineapple as the state fruit back in 2018.

Tripura's information minister Sushanta Chowdhry and Biplab Kumar Deb, Chief Minister on Tuesday agreed to the proposal, of cost Rs.153 crores. Out of 153 crores, 10 would come from the state budget. The rest of the fund would be covered through NEC (North East Center), TRLM (Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission), horticultural department funds, and other private and public sectors. This proposal will work for the cultivation of fruits and will also add value to the products.

Tripura grows 1.28 Lakh MT Pineapple every year. Production of pineapple in Tripura has vastly increased since the year 2019. Tripura grows 1.28 Lakh MT Pineapple every year. In the year 2019, Biplab Kumar Deb decided to increase the export of fruits to the UK and other middle-eastern countries, along with many Indian cities.  Farmers earned Rs. 30 per piece last year when 350 jackfruits were exported to England last year on a commercial scale. 4000 farmers were directly involved in the cultivation of pineapple last year. The cultivation of the fruit has also doubled since last year.

The jackfruit cultivation has also doubled up since last year, 8700 hectares of land is under jackfruit cultivation. The fruit is also quite popular among the locals.
