Union Minister of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare and Tribal Affairs, Arjun Munda launched the Framework for Voluntary Carbon Market in Agriculture Sector and Accreditation Protocol of Agroforestry Nurseries on January 29 in Delhi. It is a significant move aimed at promoting sustainable agricultural practices and providing opportunities for economic benefits to small and medium farmers. The event witnessed the presence of Secretary Manoj Ahuja, Dr. Himanshu Pathak (Secretary of DARE and Director General of ICAR), and senior officials from Central and State Ministries and various organizations associated with agriculture. Additionally, several stakeholders participated virtually in the program.

Encouraging Carbon Credit Benefits for Farmers

Addressing the gathering, Minister Arjun Munda highlighted the Ministry's efforts in formulating a framework to promote Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM) in the agricultural sector. The primary objective is to incentivize small and medium farmers to participate in carbon credit programs. This initiative not only promises economic advantages for farmers but also aims to expedite the adoption of environmentally friendly agricultural practices. Minister Munda appealed for collaborative efforts from the central and state ministries and other relevant organizations to facilitate the growth of the carbon market, emphasizing the importance of focusing on the needs and preferences of farmers in the southern regions.

Strengthening Agricultural Contribution to Economy

Acknowledging the significant role of the agriculture sector in India's economy, Arjun Munda highlighted its contribution to the livelihoods of millions. With 54.6% of the country's workforce engaged in agriculture and allied activities, the sector constitutes 18.6% of the GDP, covering a sown area of 139.3 million hectares. In line with the sustainable development vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Ministry has undertaken various measures to enhance the sector's resilience and productivity.

Accreditation Protocol for Agroforestry Nurseries

Minister Munda emphasized the importance of the Accreditation Protocol for Agroforestry Nurseries, considering it as a vital step in strengthening institutional arrangements for the production and certification of planting material. This protocol is expected to play a crucial role in promoting agroforestry across the country. Minister Munda urged all stakeholders to adopt the protocol to ensure the availability of quality planting material, thereby achieving the objectives outlined in the National Agroforestry Policy. He also stressed the proper utilization of natural resources for sustainable development.

Highlighting Prime Minister Narendra Modi's commitment to the development of the agricultural sector and addressing climate change, Minister Munda expressed the government's dedication to resolving challenges faced by farmers.

Arjun Munda emphasized the sensitivity of the Prime Minister towards agricultural development and climate change, reassuring that under his leadership, the government is fully committed to finding solutions to the problems confronting the sector.
