Hard work always pays off! Talent always finds a way! 27 years old Sana Khan has proved this by starting her own vermicomposting company. Fascinated by earthworms, Sana started this business. Let us proceed further to know the complete story of this UP girl who has become a role model for youngsters of her age.

How it All Started?

Sana Khan, a girl from Meerut, Uttar Pradesh wanted to become a doctor. But when she couldn’t clear the medical entrance exam, she joined IMS Engineering college with Biotech branch in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh.

Sana told that her father was a tailor and her brother worked in a factory. They all wanted me to become a doctor, but I couldn’t clear the medical entrance exam and took admission in IMS Engineering college.

Sana started SJ Organics at the age of 23 in 2014, with the support of her brother, Junaid Khan who helped her financially. In the beginning, Sana had tied-up with the dairy owners and sourced the waste generated at their centers for vermicomposting. But this didn’t work well. Then she decided to employ contractors to bring the dairy & biodegradable household waste.

Process of Vermicomposting

Later, she used that waste for vermicomposting, by feeding it to the red earthworms (efficient for vermicomposting). This process of preparing vermicompost from organic waste takes around one and a half months. And after that, the compost is sieved and enriched with cow urine that acts as a natural pesticide and fertilizer.

Admiration by PM in his Mann ki Baat

Sana started generating good profits from 2015, and by the year 2020, the company received 500 tonnes of waste and produced 150 tonnes of vermicompost per month. With the combined work of Sana (production) and her brother Junaid & her husband Syed Akram Raza (marketing), the company generates an annual yield of Rs. 1 crore. Their firm has also become popular all across the country.

In addition, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also admired the young girl for her efforts & hard work in his Mann ki Baat. He said that women like Sana Khan are an inspiration to others.
