Kargil Vijay Diwas, also known as Kargil Victory Day, is an annual commemoration observed in India on July 26, to honour the Indian Armed Forces' triumph over Pakistan in the Kargil War.

This conflict occurred between May and July 1999 in the Kargil district of the union territory of Ladakh, which was part of the former state of Jammu and Kashmir before being divided into two federally administered territories by the Indian government.

The Kargil War arose from the infiltration of Pakistani troops and armed insurgents into the Indian side of the Line of Control (LOC), which serves as the de facto border between India and Pakistan in the Kashmir region. Exploiting the terrain and strategic positions along the high-altitude mountains, the Pakistani forces engaged in intense fighting, presenting significant challenges for the Indian military.

What made the conflict particularly noteworthy was that it marked the first instance of direct, open warfare between India and Pakistan since both countries had conducted nuclear tests in 1998. The war garnered global attention and showcased the exceptional bravery, determination, and sacrifice of the Indian soldiers who fought under extreme conditions to reclaim the invaded territory.

Kargil Vijay Diwas 2023 History

The Kargil War, named after the Kargil district where the majority of the fighting occurred, was a significant armed conflict between India and Pakistan. It was sparked when disguised Pakistani troops infiltrated Indian-controlled territory in the Kargil region, violating the Line of Control (LoC), the de facto border between the two countries.

The intrusion took India by surprise, leading to a swift and comprehensive military response to drive out the Pakistani intruders from the Indian side of the LoC. The war witnessed intense and fierce battles as both sides engaged in combat amidst the rugged and mountainous terrain.

Throughout the conflict, the Indian armed forces, including the Indian Army, Indian Air Force, and Indian Navy, demonstrated remarkable courage and determination. Despite the challenging conditions and harsh weather, they successfully pushed back the Pakistani intruders and recaptured the strategic high outposts that had been occupied by the enemy. Their valorous efforts resulted in the eventual victory of India in the Kargil War.

May 1999: A Critical Turning Point

In May 1999, intruders were spotted atop Kargil ridges during routine Army patrols. Pakistan aimed to dominate the highway, cutting off Leh from Srinagar with 600-800 infiltrators. The Indian Army swiftly mobilized to recapture the occupied heights in decisive action.

How did it begin?

In early May 1999, local shepherds were the first to inform the Indian Army about the presence of Pakistani intruders at the heights of Kargil.

Tragically, during a patrol to the captured heights, five Indian Army soldiers were killed by the intruding forces. Reports of infiltrations were also received from the Dras, Kaksar, and Mushkoh sectors. The strategic positioning of the infiltrators at advantageous heights provided them with an upper hand during the initial stages of the conflict.
